Tobias Scholz

Born 1976 in Passau.

Tobias Scholz studied journalism, social theory and North American studies in Munich and Berlin. Since 2004, he has been a research associate at the department of sociology of the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies (FU Berlin) and has done his PhD on the topic of the visual-medial communication of suffering (»Rituale des Sehens – (hochmoderne) Sozialintegration und die Kontingenzen des Mitleids« [Rituals of seeing – (ultra-modern) social integration and the contingencies of pity], to be released in 2010).

Besides the connection of sociological action theory with the concepts of iconicity and seeing, his research focuses on media and communication theory, theory of aesthetics as well as the theory and history of photography.

Tobias Scholz has held lectures at the annual conferences of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft (DGPuK) in 2005 and the International Visual Sociological Association (IVSA) in 2006, among others. He published the article »Medienrituale der Integration – eine Fallstudie zur Tsunamikatastrophe« [Media rituals of integration – a case study on the Tsunami catastrophe] (with Harald Wenzel) in: Medien der Gesellschaft – Gesellschaft der Medien, 2006, (ed.
