Sarie Nijboer

Born 1990 in Wijhe/Netherlands.

Sarie Nijboer is a Dutch curator and art writer based in Berlin/Germany. She has a background in design and studied Cultures of the Curatorial in the post-graduate master program at the University of Leipzig/Germany. Her curatorial practice is connected to finding new approaches in exhibition making and art writing, in which she interrogates, among other things, the function of language, and cultural structures. 

Within her curatorial projects, she is also investigating the possibilities of curating outside the »white cube«, in order to encourage a more intimate and unrehearsed way of discussing art. She has been co-organising »Conversas Berlin« since 2016 – a series of weekly conversations where people get to know and discuss a variation of projects and interests. The project was founded by Constança Saraiva and Mafalda Fernandes in Lisbon/Portugal in 2012 and is nowadays a project of many people and cities. 

In 2018, Sarie co-founded the online art magazine textur. The magazine is a text-based territory in which to extend the medium of art writing in the exploration of social, geographic, political and economic structures. textur is intended as a format that mixes different forms of art and text, comprising artistic interventions, opinions and thoughts.

She has participated in the artistic research residency program Pink Island in Jeju/South-Korea in 2018 and is currently working on a study on the role of language in art exhibitions through performance art, which emerged from the exhibition How do we speak? A repertoire of languagethat took place at the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst in Leipzig in April/May 2019. The research is an analysis of the concept of language and power relations, body and voice, the role of the author, (mis)translations and the relationship between language, mediator, visitor and space.
