Sarat Maharaj

Born 1951 in South Africa.

Sarat Maharaj lives and works as an author, scientist, curator, and professor in Lund/Sweden and London/UK. He studied in South Africa and London and received his PhD (The Dialectic of Modernism and Mass Culture: Studies in Post War British Art) at the Goldsmiths College, University of London. He is an expert relating to the work of Richard Hamilton, Marcel Duchamp and James Joyce. Sarat Maharaj is professor for Visual Art and Knowledge Systems at the Malmö Art Academy of the Lund University in Sweden. From 1980 to 2005 he worked as a professor for art and art theory at the Goldsmiths College, University of London. Furthermore, he taught as a guest lecturer at several institutions, amongst others at the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht/Netherlands and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Berlin/Germany. His articles are published in numerous journals worldwide.

Curatorial projects include: There Is Always a Cup of Sea to Sail, 29th São Paulo Biennale, São Paulo/Brazil (2010); Farewell to Postcolonialism, Towards a Post-Western Modernity, Guangzhou Triennial, Guangzhou/China (2008); Knowledge Lab, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2005); documenta 11, Kassel/Germany (2002); retinal.optical. visual.conceptual…, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam/Netherlands (2002) with Richard Hamilton and Ecke Bonk.

From 2013 to 2015, Sarat Maharaj is the juror for Humanities at Akademie Schloss Solitude.
