Born 1959 in Frankfurt am Main/Germany.

After completing an apprenticeship as a carpenter, Norbert Schliewe worked as an artisan for several years. From 1983, he studied visual communication with a focus on film at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main. His theoretical diploma thesis (1990) dealt with the representation of war in the anti-war film. His filmic diploma thesis (in cooperation with Katrin Köster) is entitled »Erduntergänge vom Mond aus betrachtet« [earthsets seen from the moon]. Norbert Schliewe works as a freelance filmmaker and media artist.

Selected projects: »Illumenis«, essence of art, photos and photomontage (2002–2009); »die Luft über dem Toaster« [the air above the toaster], media and travelling arts project for testing a historical, visual admission procedure (1995–2009); »Now What«, USA/BRD, documentary-experimental film, personal description (1994); »San Francisco street record project«, record chronicle (1993).

Selected exhibitions: Schliewe’s performance »die Luft über dem Toaster« was shown at the Dutch Electronic Art Festival V2 in Rotterdam/Netherlands. He also took part in the project »Temporary Home« (2007) in Kassel/Germany and in the group exhibition »Performer« at Ridehuset Oslo/Norway (2001). In 2002, »die Luft über dem Toaster« was shown as a solo exhibition at Red Gallery Kingston upon Hull/Great Britain.

In 1994 Schliewe won the Hessischer Filmpreis and in 2004 he was given the Offpop-Award for his media performance »die Luft über dem Toaster«.
