Mykola Shkaraban graduated from Kiev Karpenko-Kariy State Institute of the Theatrical Arts in 1992. He currently is the chief director of the TV channel Gamma in Kiev (www.gamma.tv). Since 2003, he has been working as a director for different Ukrainian TV programs on the channels NTKU, M1, and TV1.
From 1998 to 2008 Shkaraban was professor for acting and directing at Kiev National University of Culture and Arts. In 2006, he received his PhD in the history and theory of culture on the topic of »François Delsarte’s System of Expression in the context of world performing arts«.
In 1996, Shkaraban initiated the publishing series »Manual for Performer«, an Ukrainian translation of texts of famous European theatre directors, which were never before translated and published, among others, Jerzy Grotowski, Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, François Delsarte, Eugenio Barba, Yoshi Oida, Peter Brook, Kazuo Ohno, Tatsumi Hijikata, Min Tanaka, and Filippo Marinetti.
In 1993, he founded the »Nascentes« Theatre Laboratory, an experimental theatre studio, which aim was to search for new theatre forms. In its ten years of existence »Nascentes« has directed dozen performances played in the Ukraine and other European countries, such as the UK, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Poland.
In 1990, Shkaraban initiated several international theatre projects with the participation of Ukrainian and foreign directors and actors in Ukraine concentrating on various actor techniques and addressed to young Ukrainian artists.
