Max Schumacher studied theater/dramaturgy at the Humboldt-Universität Berlin and performance studies at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, as part of a Fulbright fellowship (1997–1999, MA).

In 1999, he founded the interdisciplinary performance company post theater [new york / berlin / tokyo] in New York. Together with the company he has worked as a director and/or dramatic producer on projects in more than 30 cities in 15 countries and was invited to numerous festivals such as the International Festival for the Arts Castilia y Leon, Salamanca (2008/2009), Tanz im August, Berlin (2004/2006), the Singapore Arts Festival (2005), and the Bonn Biennale (2004).

Schumacher was a fellow at Tokyo Wonder Site (2009), Solyst Artist in Residence (2008), Taipei Artist Village (2007/2008), Künstlerhaus Ahrenshoop (2006), PACT Zollverein (2006), and Kunstraum Syltquelle (2005/2006), among others. He was given several grants from the Hauptstadtkulturfonds Berlin, as well as one-time grants from Saison Foundation Japan and the Croatian cultural ministry, among others.

Since 2000, he has been realizing his multi media performances and installations mainly in artistic cooperation with Hiroko Tanahashi who has been co-heading post theater together with him since 2002.
