Marios Joannou Elia

Born 1978 in Pafos/Cyprus.

Marios Joannou Elia studied composition with Adriana Hölszky at the University of Music, Theater and Visual Arts Mozarteum in Salzburg/Austria and with Klaus Huber at the University of Music in Basel/Switzerland as well as musicology with Dieter Torkewitz at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Selected compositions: »Die Jagd«, opera, Staatsoper Stuttgart in cooperation with Theater Rampe in Stuttgart/Germany (2008); »Elpis«, for seven accordions and two percussionists, Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam/Netherlands (2006/2007); »Akanthai«, for chamber orchestra, Haus der Deutschen Ensemble Akademie Frankfurt am Main/Germany (2006); »Dornen« for orchestra, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken – Kaiserslautern in Germany, (2006); »Der Wegweiser«, for sinfonietta, Berliner Philharmonie, Berlin/Germany (2005).

Prizes and awards (selection): first prize and PWM edition’s special prize at the Kazimierz Serocki international composers’ composition, Warsaw/Poland (2008); first prize and special prize of the jury at the contemporary music interpretation composition of the University Mozarteum in Salzburg, performed by the Miscelanea Guitar Quartet (2008); first prize at the Edison Denisov international composition competition, Moscow/Russia (2007); first prize at the competition »Recherche« for composition, organized by the Mozarteum Salzburg, the Klangspuren Schwaz Festival and the Ensemble Recherche Freiburg i.
