Marina Gioti

Born in Athens/Greece.

Marina Gioti is a filmmaker and visual artist based in Athens. She studied Chemical Engineering, Environmental Management (MSc), Filmmaking, and Media and Communication (MA) in Greece, Great Britain, and Belgium.

With cinema at the core of her interdisciplinary practice, Marina Gioti explores cinematic narrative techniques and aesthetics across media, through her videos, installations and media art works. She has a healthy obsession with found objects, which she often manipulates in order to have her own take on old, forgotten stories and histories.

She has co-curated two art exhibitions and programmed experimental and documentary films for underground screenings and film festivals for more than ten years. She has served as jury at Courtisane Festival in Ghent/Belgium and at TENT, the Dutch art academies awards in 2012 and 2013.

Her work has been screened and exhibited worldwide at both international film festivals (Toronto IFF, Transmediale, Jeonju IFF, Les Rencontres Internationales, Viennale) and in museums/visual art platforms (Bozar, Caixa Forum Barcelona, Deste Foundation, Thessaloniki Biennial, Wroclaw Media Art Biennial).

She was recently commissioned by the Onassis Cultural Center in Athens to produce an installation utilizing sleep study clinic data for the exhibition Hypnos Project in collaboration with one of the country’s major hospitals, Evangelismos.

In 2017, she was a participating artist at documenta 14, where she presented her debut feature film, The Invisible Hands. She also participates at the 1st Anren Biennial, which takes place in October 2017 in Chengdu, Shichuan/China.

Marina Gioti is a fellow in cooperation with Kunsthalle Athena in Athens/Greece.
