Marina Fokidis is a curator and writer based in Athens/Greece. She is the founding and artistic director of Kunsthalle Athena, which started as an experimental platform and is now taking its permanent form. Curated by Fokidis and team Kunsthalle Athena presented several exhibitions, workshops, performances and talks between 2010 and 2014, amongst others This Must be the Place, Political Speeches, A Wonderful Life, Summer in the Middle of Winter. From 2000 to 2008 Marina Fokidis was the co-director of Oxymoron, a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of contemporary visual art in Greece and on an international level. Fokidis is also the founding and editorial director of South As a State of Mind, a bi-annual art and culture publication (since 2012).
Furthermore, Marina Fokidis was one of the curators of the 3rd Thessaloniki Biennial (2011), the commissioner and the curator of the Greek Pavilion at the 51rst Venice Biennial (2003) and one of the curators of the 1rst Tirana Biennial (2001). She has also curated several exhibitions in various Greek and international institutions including: Open Form, a group show of international artists at Art-Athina (2013), Random Rules – A Channel of Artists’ Selections from YouTube (ongoing), online and screened at Pulse Art Fair, NY (2009), Midsummer Nights Dream, a three months screening program part of Remap 2 (parallel program to Athens Biennial 2009), (Her)(His)tory, an exhibition of major video works within the last decade, juxtaposed to the historical permanent collections in the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens (2007), Anathena, an exhibition held at DESTE Foundation, based in the Athenian underground scene (2006).
Marina Fokidis has written essays for different edited collections, for artists and exhibition catalogs and for international art magazines and publications like Frieze, Art-Agenda, Artinfo, Flash Art, Art and Australia, Manifesta Journal, Empires Ruins and Networks, A Reception of Urban Ecology: Detroit and beyond, and Articulating Power and Subversion.
She participated in international conferences and discussions including Arco 2010, Art Basel Conversations 2013, and Global Art Forum, Art Dubai 2014 and has been jury member for various awards i.e. Furla Award (2013) and BES Revelacâo, Serralves Museum (2013).
Marina Fokidis is a fellow in cooperation with Künstlerhaus Stuttgart.
