Studied German, music theory and philosophy in Frankfurt and Hamburg. 1959 – 1966 International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt.

1967-1970 First engagement as dramatic producer at the State Theaters in Kiel. 1970-1977 Chief dramatic producer at the State Theater Oldenburg. Teaching position at the Unversity of Oldenburg (sociology of music).

1977-1987 Chief dramatic producer and later coordinating opera director of the Municiple Theaters in Frankfurt/M.

During time in Frankfurt teaching positions at the State University of Minnesota (Minneapolis) and Collège International de Philosophie in Paris, guest professor at the Unversity of Gießen (Institut for Applied Dramatic Arts).

Since 1991 director as well as producer of the Staatsoper Stuttgart.

1983 German Critics Prize for Theater Directing at the Frankfurt/M Opera. 1986-1992 guest professor at the Academy for Applied Arts in Vienna (Stage and Film). 1987-1989 dramaturge (Schauspiel and Oper) in Berlin, Frankfurt, Brussels and Vienna. 1989-1991 artistic director of the Thalia-Theater Hamburg.

Numerous publications in the fields of music and theater.
