István László Geher

Born in Budapest/Hungary in 1972.

István László Geher graduated from the L. Eötvös University (ELTE), Budapest in Hungarian and English literature in 1997. He received his Ph.D. in literature with a focus on Hungarian prosody.

He currently works as a teacher at the Toldy Ferenc Highschool and holds a teaching position for literature studies at the G. Károli Protestant University, Budapest.

Geher has published poetry in Hungarian newspapers (Élet és Irodalom, Népszabadság) and literary magazines (such as Jelenkor and Liget). Moreover, he has published critiques of the work of Emily Dickinson and W. B. Yeats, as well as of contemporary Hungarian poets.

Between 1994 and 2006 he wrote five volumes of poetry, most recently »Amíg alszom vigyázz magadra« (I Lay Me Down Thy Soul to Keep), Budapest, Palatinus, 2006. His translations of Philip Larkin, Emily Dickinson, William Shakespeare, W. B. Yeats, and Ted Hughes have appeared in Hungarian literary magazines and anthologies.

Geher was awarded with residencies and scholarships from institutions such as the international house of literature of Rhodes (2004) and the Radnóti scholarship for poets (2006) among many others.

István László Geher is a participant in the exchange program between Akademie Schloss Solitude and Hungarian writers in Budapest.
