Femke Snelting

Born 1969 in Utrecht/Netherlands.

Femke Snelting studied graphic design at the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam/Netherlands (1993) and the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht/Netherlands (1996). With Constant, an association for arts and media, she develops projects at the intersection of design, feminism and free software such as Transmission protocols, an exhibition/installation at the Artefact Festival at the Kunstencentrum STUK, Leuven/Belgium, and Verbindingen/Jonctions 13: Prototypes for Transmission a program of workshops lectures and performances in Brussels/Belgium, 2011.

Between 2011 and 2013 Femke Snelting coordinated the Libre Graphics Research Unit, a partnership of four European medialabs. She organised international conferences and research meetings plus curated the 13th edition of the prototyping platform Interactivos? (Medialab Prado, Madrid/Spain, 2013) to investigate the many interrelations between digital tools and creative practice.

In 2006, she co-founded the design and research team »Open Source Publishing« (OSP). Since 1996 she has been collaborating with Renée Turner and Riek Sijbring as »De Geuzen« (a foundation for multi-visual research), employing a variety of tactics to explore female identity, narratives of the archive and media image ecologies. The work has been featured worldwide in a variety of events, spaces and publications such as Z33 (Hasselt/Belgium, 2011), Peacock Visual Arts (Aberdeen/UK, 2005), and the Biennal de Valencia (Italy, 2001).

Femke Snelting is a core tutor for Media Design (MA) at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam and teaches at the École de recherche graphique in Brussels. She was awarded a development grant from the Vlaamse Gemeenschap (Flemish community of Belgium), Ministerie voor Kunsten en Erfgoed (2012) and received a scholarship from the Fonds voor Beeldende Kunsten, Vormgeving en Bouwkunst, Amsterdam (2002 and 2004).
