He studied theatre sciences, history of arts and English linguistics in Cologne, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Rochester, N.Y.
From 1992 to 1994, he was assistant producer at the Schaubühne Leniner Platz with Luc Bondy, Peter Stein, Andrea Breth, Robert Wilson.
His own productions at the Schaubühne include: Sam Shepard’s Liebestoll (1994).
His production Blunt by Karl Philipp Moritz (Staatstheater Stuttgart, 1995) was invited to the Berlin Theatre Meeting. Beginning with the season 1996/97, Elmar Goerden works as a permanent producer at the Staatstheater Stuttgart.
