Dirk Baumann works as a dramatist and curator. He’s passionate about theater, fine arts and the space in between. After stints at theaters in Berlin/Germany, Vienna/Austria and most recently at Schauspiel Dortmund/Germany, he will be part of the new artistic team led by artistic director Florian Lutz and acting director Patricia-Nickel-Dönicke at the Staatstheater Kassel/Germany from the 2020/21 season onward.
Dirk Baumann is interested in the full bandwidth of performative arts – from classical performances and experimental formats to performative encounters. For him, theater is a place of artistic community and exchange about the question of how we can and want to live together.
In 2018, Dirk Baumann completed the postgraduate course Curating in the Performing Arts, for which he received a scholarship from Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac. In 2019, he was awarded the Marie Zimmermann Fellowship for Dramaturgy at Akademie Schloss Solitude. In 2020, he curated the transdisciplinary festival Inbetween – Theater between performance and exhibition at Schauspiel Dortmund, which was funded by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation). The festival confronted the temporal and spatial capacities of theater with those of exhibition spaces and brought together artistic positions between the performing and visual arts. This included, for example, open setups in which audience members were invited to view art from their own perspectives, deciding autonomously when to come and how long to stay at a performance – and thus develop their own dramatic scenarios. Since then, he has concerned himself with transdisciplinary questions and artistic formats at the interface of theater, performance and visual arts, most recently with artists/directors Jonathan Meese and Sebastian Blasius, among others.
