David Mathews

Born 1983 in Delhi/India.

David Mathews is a pictorial storyteller from Delhi, currently based in Vienna/Austria. Having studied commercial and authorial illustration at Falmouth University, Great Britain from 2002 to 2007, he has since worked in the fields of drawn narratives, illustration, animation, and book design. His collaborators include Five Dials, Tara Books, Brunnenpassage, Vienna Independent Shorts, and Verlag Bibliothek der Provinz.

Passionate about telling stories with drawings, and of the opinion that storytelling is inextricably woven into the essence of being human, recent publications include Arboreal – a minimal narrative about being amongst trees (2017), Oscillate – a story of books and affection over distance (2016), and Wolf – an accounting of the trials of work (2015). He has exhibited at Volkstheater Wien (2016) and Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier (2015).

He has received a course fellowship for the Salzburg Summer Academy (2015), as well as stipends from the Austrian Federal Chancellery for comics (2014) and illustration (2013).

David Mathews is based in Vienna.
