Dániel Szalai is a photographer and visual artist who explores the relationships between humans and animals in his work, reflecting on sociopolitical and ecological anomalies.

After graduating in Art and Design Theory in 2012, Szalai studied Photography from 2017 to 2019 at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest/Hungary and at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna/Austria. Since 2021, he has been a PhD student in Multimedia Art at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design.

Szalai’s work has been exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions and has been featured in numerous online and print publications. His most recent project, Unleash Your Herd’s Potential, was shown at the RE/construction exhibition at Atelier de l’image in Arles/France, and at the Fotodoks Festival in Munich/Germany. Szalai’s first monograph, Novogen, was published by The Eriskay Connection in 2021.

In 2023, he was an artist-in-residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris/France. In 2020, Szalai was selected for the Futures Photography Platform, and in 2018, he received the Carte Blanche Award from Paris Photo and the Picto Foundation. He lives and works in Budapest.
