Catherine Lamb

Born 1982 in Olympia, WA/USA.

Catherine Lamb explores the interaction of tone and shadow. Early classical training led to a later study of Hindustani music in Pune/India (2003). She earned her bachelor’s degree in 2006 under James Tenney and Michael Pisaro at the California Institute of Arts, Valencia, CA/USA. She then mentored under the experimental filmmaker and Dhrupad musician Mani Kaul until his death in 2011. In 2012 she received her master’s degree in music/sound from Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY/USA.

Following, she toured extensively with her piece Shade/Gradient and was awarded the Henry Cowell Research Fellowship to work with Eliane Radigue in Paris/France. In 2013 Catherine Lamb relocated to Berlin/Germany, where she has written for Konzert Minimal, Ensemble Dedalus, and others. Her first orchestral work Portions Transparent/Opaque was premiered by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the 2014 Tectonics Festival Glasgow, Scotland. Her writings and recordings are published in KunstMusik, Open Space Magazine, QO2, NEOS, another timbre, winds measure recordings, and Sacred Realism.

She has recently been selected as a Staubach Fellow for the 2016 International Summer Course for New Music, Darmstadt/Germany. She further received grants by the W. A. Gerbode Foundation and the W. & F. Hewlett Foundation for Dilations, which premiered at the Other Minds Festival, San Francisco, CA/USA in 2008.
