Born 1954 in Paris. Studied Spanish and Portuguese literature and languages as well as art history from 1972-80.

Curator at the State Museum for Modern Art Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris from 1981-90. Professorship at the Ecole du Louvre from 1989-1991 with courses in contemporary art.Taught „Primitive” History of Cubism, courses in anthropology and aesthetics at the Department of Ethnology at the University of Paris X – Nanterre from 1990-93.

As of 1990 curator of the National Gallery Jeu de Paume, Paris. Artistic director of the „documenta X” in Kassel. Since 1998 lectures on curatorial practise and consulting activities on all five continents.
