Angelina Polonskaja

Born 1969 in Malakhovka/Russia.

From 1987 to 1992 Angelina Polonskaja studied at the Moscow State Academy of Physical Culture and Sport in Moscow/Russia and finished her studies with the bachelor’s degree. From 2002 to 2006 she participated in Spanish courses at the Instituto Cervantes in Moscow.

Since 1998 she has been a member of the Moscow Union of Writers and in 2003, she became a member of the Russian PEN-Centre. Angelina Polonskaja works as poet, librettist and writer. Her works have been published in well-known poetry journals like World Literature Today, Descant, Modern Poetry in Translation, Poetry Review UK, The American Poetry Review, The International Poetry Review, Boulevard, The Iowa Review, The Massachusetts Review, Prairie Schooner, Barrow Street, Poetry Daily, AGNI, New England Review, The Literary Review, The Kenyon Review and The Journal.

She received several awards and scholarships from institutions such as Cove Park Scottish Arts Council (2008), the Camargo Foundation (2009), Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center (2010) and the Villa Sträuli in Winterthur/Switzerland (2011).

In 2004 her book A voice appeared in the acclaimed series Writings from an Unbound Europe at the Northwestern University Press. Her book was shortlisted for the Corneliu M. Popescu Prize for European Poetry in Translation. In 2011 the Oratorio Requiem: Kursk debuted at the Melbourne Arts Festival in Australia, whose libretto consists of ten of Angelina Polonskaja’s poems. Paul Klee’s Boat, a bilingual edition of her latest poems has been published by Zephyr Press in 2013 and was shortlisted for the 2014 Best Translated Book Award and the 2014 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation. An edition of her poems in German and Russian language will be published in early 2015 in the Leipziger Literaturverlag.
