In her professorship at the ABK, Alisa Margolis will define figurative drawing and painting as a fundamentally new means of artistic expression. She employs peer-to-peer-based practical experimentation methods borrowed from conceptual and performance art and combines them with a reconceptualization of classical drawing and painting techniques. Inspired by the ethos of the »painter of modern life«, students in her class are encouraged to fully explore the myriad possibilities offered by painting. Through her expert instruction, they are also urged to cultivate and critically scrutinize their artistic practice continually with the aim of developing their own artistic stance on the art scene.
Alisa Margolis was a fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude in the field of visual arts in 2009 and 2010. Born in Kiev/Ukraine, she studied at Columbia University in New York, NY/USA, and was a postgraduate fellow at the independent art institute De Ateliers in Amsterdam/Netherlands from 2001 to 2003. She is the recipient of numerous awards and received the Villa Romana Prize in 2015. Alisa Margolis regularly shows her work in solo and group exhibitions in Europe and the USA.
