In »The New Scientific Spirit« (1988), French philosopher of science Gaston Bachelard outlines a new method and concept for the formation of scientific knowledge, which he terms »phenomenotechnique«.

Thus, laboratory techniques, for instance, and technology produce new knowledge and become theorems in themselves; they form a precondition of knowledge acquisition. It is through technological experiments and their experiential surplus that new phenomena, in e. g. science, are disclosed – not merely by perception or observation.

In the arts – and in the visual arts in particular – Bachelard’s experimental technoscientific method of a »phenomenotechnique« has hardly been scrutinized and probed yet. In light of the current interest in artistic research and the material turn in art theory and beyond, in which more than often art and science are interrelated, Bachelard’s dynamic concept and methodology discloses new poetic configurations of knowledge.

This symposium has been organized by Rania Gafaar, a former fellow of the Akademie Schloss Solitude’s art, science & business program. It will elaborate on Bachelard’s poetic as well as technoscientific reflections and experimental theory in contemporary media theory, the visual arts and philosophy.
