»Anatomy Of Non-Fact. Chapter 1-AI Hyperrealism« by Martyna Marciniak

As part of this year’s 38th Stuttgarter Filmwinter – Festival for Expanded Media, the Haus für Film und Medien (HFM) is showing works by young film and media professionals for the fourth time with its »talents’ encounters« program. The Akademie Schloss Solitude is this year’s guest with works by Louis Henderson and Martyna Marciniak.

For over 35 years, the Festival has been devoted to crossing the border between cinema and media art with an adventurous international programme comprising films, workshops, Expanded Media exhibition and performances for people of all ages. The Festival’s core are the international competitions for short film and the international competition Expanded Media (exhibition) – flanked by a comprehensive programme.

Afterthoughts of a Walk on the Naze by Louis Henderson

In the year of his death, my great-uncle, the artist Nigel Henderson, wrote a letter to my future self. In it he asked me to decipher a painting he had made of the petrified cliffs at Walton on the Naze in Essex, in the East of England. As a clue, he sent me a photocopied manuscript of the novel »The Fourbanks of the River of Space« by the South American writer Wilson Harris, who lived nearby. Afterthoughts of a Walk on the Naze is a fiction that attempts to respond to his letter.

Anatomy Of Non-Fact. Chapter 1-AI Hyperrealism by Martyna Marciniak

AI Hyperrealism is the first chapter of Anatomy of Non-Fact, focusing on the figure of the fake Balenciaga Pope, which captured the attention and imagination of many, during the so-called AI-boom of 2023. In the film, a monologue reflecting on the nature of fact, delivered by the Balenciaga Pope, confronts the viewer’s expectation of authorities of truth, while bending the established notations of visual evidence. In the context of mounting concern with synthetic image’s potential to provoke mass-misinformation events, the work urges a reconsideration of our visual culture’s relationship to photographic image instead.
