From October 30 – November 30, 2014, the Württembergischer Kunstverein and Akademie Schloss Solitude, both in Stuttgart, are carrying out the project Public Library. Rethinking the Infrastructures of Knowledge Production, which consists of an exhibition, an open laboratory, and a »scandromat« at the Kunstverein’s platform Querungen (Traversals). Also, a conference will be held from October 30 to November 2, 2014 at the Kunstverein and Akademie Schloss Solitude.

The project, initiated by the free software advocate, cultural explorer, and social instigator Marcell Mars, who was a fellow in the art, science & business program at Akademie Schloss Solitude in 2013, reflects and discusses today’s conditions of knowledge production: from the capitalist-neoliberal impact on education and its regulation, commodification, exploitation, and monopolization of knowledge, to alternative, critical, open –  and, in some cases, more and more criminalized – ways of learning and sharing knowledge.

Mars’ ongoing Public Library envisions a constantly growing, decentralized network of digital libraries based on the open source library application Calibre and the plug-in »Let’s Share Books.«The latter was designed by Mars to connect and share Calibre libraries via the Internet.

Influences on this project range from open archives such as Ubu Web, Monoskop, Aaaaarg.org, or Library Genesis, to anarchistic pirate structures, to alternative educational projects like The Public School. The impact of these heterogeneous and controversial models of appropriating, sharing, »stealing«, and/or »borrowing« knowledge will also be discussed, as the conference explores networks which neither accept the increasingly strict regulations of the official infrastructures and systems of education, nor the new monopoles of knowledge, nor even the regulations of »common properties« or »creative commons«.

Additionally, the role of institutions in this particular context will be debated, as we question how state-managed or independent institutions can act as protectors of the freedom of art, research, education, activism, etc. while taking into consideration legal ramifications and the responsibility to providing access to education and knowledge.
