Poems want to be heard. They remain incomplete without sound and rhythm. They do not only live on paper, in data files or in the reader’s head, but live equally through the voice of the author, the ear of the audience. Therefore the World Poetry Day of the UNESCO – initiated in 2000 – not only affirms the significance of poetry and the plurality of the cultural asset language, but also the importance of oral traditions. Together with partner institutions, the Literaturwerkstatt Berlin annually invites poets who have spent longer stays in Germany as fellows. In 2007 the fellows are from six different countries – an opportunity for a world poetry review.
