Since 2000, World Poetry Day has been held under the patronage of the German UNESCO Commission on March 21 each year. It recognises the importance of poetry, the diversity of language as a cultural asset and the significance of oral traditions. The Haus für Poesie in Berlin has organized the main event in Germany together with its partners, including Akademie Schloss Solitude, since the event’s inauguration. This year, current fellow Ramy Al-Asheq will represent Akademie Schloss Solitude, reading from his texts.
Poets appearing on stage this year include: Syrian-Palestinian poet Ramy Al-Asheq, who is based in Berlin. Athena Farrokhzad, born in Tehran, based in Stockholm. Her poetry melds lyrical, political and conceptual processes. Endre Kukorelly has built a poetic bridge between Hungary and Germany. Charlotte Warsen’s texts sound »like good jazz«, wrote Nico Bleutge in the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Michael Stauffer, an artist from Switzerland, is known for his spoken word performances. Marie Kaiser, a journalist at radioeins, will introduce the authors and moderate the evening.
