Kaiwan Mehta
Archive Exhibition
In early February 2010, the Akademie Schloss Solitude is handing over its archive, which now represents 20 years of activity, to the Ludwigsburg State Archives. In the run-up to this transfer, the Akademie presents an exhibition of archive documents selected by the Indian architect Kaiwan Mehta. It consists of 13 cartons that he assembled, one of which will be opened at the beginning of each month until December 2010 and given to the State Archives at the end of the respective month. One open carton will still be on view at Solitude in December 2010; the remaining 12 cartons will already be in Ludwigsburg.
With the financial support of the Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg.

Mike Osborne
Papers and Trains
For the photo exhibition »Papers and Trains«, Mike Osborne connects his previous photographic projects »Press Pictures« (2005-2008), a comprehensive observation of the newspaper-production process, and »Underground« (2009), a series dedicated to the Stuttgart public transport system’s underground waiting areas.
At first glance, the two projects may seem very different, but the two photo series both aim to visualize complex processes of modern public life, like the manufacture of information or underground public transportation.

Real Dance Super Sentai (Ines Birkhan & Bertram Dhellemmes)
Dancing on Ashes (North)
Performance to accompany the exhibition openings on January 14.
»Dancing on Ashes (North)« is an introduction to the transmedial project »Angel Meat« on the one hand, and is a freestanding work on the other. Ines Birkhan and Bertram Dhellemmes present an open arrangement of scenic literature, dance, music and video, which reveal extracts of the fictional world of »Angel Meat«.

The Threatening Threads
Workshop, exhibition and performance with Tobias Bodio, Ivan Civic, Sonja Füsti, Antje Kalus, Ingrid Mitterer, Zsuzsanna Szentirmai-Joly and Gwen van den Eijnde
Seven fellows, all working at the same time with costumes, textiles and fashion – it’s something that has never happened before at Solitude! In this collaborative project, these fellows transform the Akademie’s lower Hirschgang into a workshop that is both a performance and exhibition space. At the same time they play »Cadavres Exquis«, the game of surrealists, which consists of having several people compose a sentence or image without knowing what the others are doing. The game is intensified in that all participants have to agree on material and color. In the end, hat, shirt, blouse, pants, skirt and shoes are all worn together randomly and presented as a performance by a living mannequin.

Alena Williams
»Light Is a Kind of Rhythm«
On the opening evening Alena Williams presents her book Light Is a Kind of Rhythm, which has just been released with merz&solitude, with a screening and a short lecture. The book provides a speculative history of cinema: Alena Williams investigates the relationship of light and moving images from an early moment in the history of film to that of the present day. She assumes that contemporary artists like Jan Hammer, Jutta Koether, Andreas Wutz, Die Tödliche Doris, and Matthias Müller return to a 1920s-style engagement with cinema. In their films, videos and digital slides, the moving image offers an alternative mode for thinking through abstraction; static paintings, collages, and walls are reconstituted as animate, reflective objects, while transient light effects are extracted from life and assigned entirely new meanings.
During her presentation Alena Williams will show a selection of contemporary films and videos by Jan Hammer, Die Tödliche Doris, and Jutta Koether alongside the work of László Moholy-Nagy.
With a performance by Ivan Civic on January 28, 2010, at 8pm.
