Ana Mendes
The People’s Collection

​The People’s Collection is a project that opens up a discourse between performance, photography and activism. It involves an exploration of the various ethnographic museums around the world and asks questions about post-colonialism, memory and identity.

In this work, Ana Mendes invited people to a tour/game to ethnographic museums around the world in which they could choose an object that they wished to see returned to the country of origin. Afterwards, she visited the museums, photographed the objects and made a collection of postcards, named after each participant.

In 2016, she developed this project at the Linden Museum, during her artist-in-residence at Akademie Schloss Solitude. One year later, she is back to Stuttgart to show the results of her work in an exhibition that happens in two places at the same time. At Akademie Schloss Solitude, the complete collection of postcards, publication and documentation is exhibited. At the Linden Museum, the comments of the participants are temporarily uploaded to the audio guides of the museum, substituting the official description of the objects by the voices of ordinary people. 

The exhibition at Linden Museum Stuttgart will be opened on May 19, 2017 at 7.30 pm and will be on view until 2 July, 2017 as well as the exhibition at Akademie Schloss Solitude.

Curtis Roth
Instrument X: The Exhibition

Any exhibition exhibits three forms of labor: the labor of an artist in the production of things, the labor of an audience in paying attention toward things, and a darker form of labor necessary to make »anything« appear in the world. This is the labor of shipping things across oceans, of affixing things to white walls, and of documenting things so as to ease their afterlife as images online. This third form of labor is underwritten by an imperative to erase itself so as to naturalize a thing’s status as a medium, greasing an exchange between the labor of an artist and the attention of an audience. For eight months Curtis Roth produced nine instruments for making the dark labor that underlies digital architectural production visible, when considering how to show you all this work it occurred to him to use the first form of labor to exchange the second for the third. For three months the following exhibition was exhibited to a pool of anonymous online workers, what remains are only the leftovers of their spent attention and those odds and ends that accompany any exhibition of things.

Sebastian Däschle
COMMON FUTURE

The Anthropocene challenges mankind to shape its own future as well as the destiny of the planet. The ground on (matrix of) which this future rises, is the world of today. The exhibition COMMON FUTURE is part of a continuous process with the aim of developing sustainable socio-ecologic concepts. It invites us to expand our vision: our vision of the world, our vision towards other people.
