Life as a game, game as art. The title “Merry Go Round” refers to the titular 1978 film by Jacque Rivette: in this film, the narrating character is displaced by the atmosphere of constant movement. The works in this group exhibition impart a similar atmosphere.
Invited by Solitude fellow Claudia Kugler, four befriended artists recreate the Akademie project space as a game of movement with her.
In the center of Kugler’s creation is the illusion of space. Her animated images are mysterious spatial scenarios whose tension is created by minimalist camerawork. In her large-format digital prints, she works with contrasting light, creating a game of proximity and depth that lend her images a strongly theatrical character. What is represented becomes an empty space that demands a scene. The artists are Miriam Böhm, Nadim Vardag, Michael Schneider and Linda Weiss.
Claudia Kugler (*1969 in Auerbach) works as an artist in Stuttgart and Nuremberg. Selected solo exhibitions include “The jungle crouched, humped in silence” (Städtische Galerie Waldkraiburg, 2004), “Claudia Kugler” (Galerie Ben Kaufmann, Munich, 2005) and “Cabin Fever” (Galerie Sima, Nuremberg, 2005). Selected group exhibitions include “Privatgrün” (Dachgarten, Fuhrwerkswaage Kunstraum e.V., Cologne, 2004) and “Madame Réalité” (E-Werk, Hallen für Kunst, Freiburg). Kugler has been an Akademie fellow since October 2005.
