This exhibition reflects on artistic residencies – an institution dedicated to art but also one that refers to the day-to-day artistic practice that involves life and work, rest and mobilisation. The title, »Tytuł Roboczy. Working Title«, refers to the circumstances of the creative process which are here defined as studio, privacy, travelling. This intermediary sphere of circumstances is presented through the lenses of distinct realities created in the artworks but also via an exhibition space that combines a travel office, a reading room, a workshop and a kitchen. The expectations regarding the future location of artistic residencies trigger a series of potential usages and abuses.
The starting point for the artists participating in the exhibition is arbitrary. What they have in common is the fact that when pursuing their artistic path they spent several months in the role of a resident in a city (Warsaw/Poland, Stuttgart/Germany, Novi Sad/Serbia) in some country, in an institution that deals with the organisation of artistic sojourns. Now they have been invited to take part in an exhibition that opens the Laboratory – at The Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle – the new headquarters for artistic residencies in Warsaw. In accordance with the logic of displacement that marks out the stage design of space, the exhibition will travel next May to the castle that houses the Akademie Schloss Solitude.
A suggestion of one of the many possible perceptions of works of art – which, after all, form their own territories of influence – is that what we define here as circumstantial and arbitrary allows the activation of meaning linked to the mobility of art and the artist, the ways in which art/the artist mediates between the private and the public, between the civic and the institutional, between identification and distance. The reflexive space that is thus opened contains the risk of failure, misunderstanding, different versions of the past and the future. Working titles and the world as presented in the completed work intermingle.
»Tytuł Roboczy. Working Title« extends into a series of accompanying events, screenings, concerts and informal meetings. An exhibition is organized by a-i-r laboratory in cooperation with Akademie Schloss Solitude as part of the »Opening Our Closed Shops« program.
