David Mathews »Fox«
»To enter a wood is to pass into a different world in which we ourselves are transformed.«
Roger Deakin, Wildwood: A Journey through Trees (2007)
Time spent in the woods remains one of the great pleasures afforded to all (at least, for those with the luxury of time and the setting to indulge in it); it is one of those rare moments where you are wholly immersed in the life of the world – the living canopy of leaves and branches; the forest denizens going about their lives; the smallest nuances of the weather; the slow, quiet grandeur of the trees themselves.
Fox is an ode to the wooded world, continuing a series – developed in 2019 at the Akademie Schloss Solitude – seeking to underscore the importance of nurturing a relationship with the natural world, and to gently lead its viewers out of their urban constrictions and back into the woods.
David Mathews is an illustrator from Delhi, living in Vienna. He works with comics, documentary drawing, and animation, and was a 2019 fellow in the area of design at the Akademie Schloss Solitude.
