Exhibition: Die Römer kommt

Date: Feb 18, 2006, 20:00 Uhr

Duration: Feb 18, 2006

Location: Projektraum Römerstraße 2A

Stuttgart’s two major promotional institutions meet halfway: fellows of both the Akademie Schloss Solitude and the art foundation Baden-Württemberg collaborate in the city for the first time to transform the “Römerstrasse” project space. This evening is the beginning of a series of cooperations to be continued in autumn 2006.

Starting at 8 pm works by fellows from both institutions will be presented in a cinema-like atmosphere. The artists from Germany, Libanon and the United States utilize various cinematographic methods in their work. Alex Györfi will present a new video with musician Carsten Erobique Mayer from the “Pimiu home recordings” series. Filmmaker Daniel Kunle will show two short films “Freie Auswahl” and “Land of banality”, which colorfully present the emotionless monotony of behavioral habits and the banality of today’s consumer society. Heike Aumüller’s short film “Absense” translates the film historic aspect of the invisiblitly of an image frame into a burlesque plot. The artist Jackie Sumell transforms a dead turke into a live American eagle in her video “Fanfare for a common man”; an ironic comment on the history of her country. Monika Nuber’s animations depict fictional characters that are protagonists of music videos, autobiographical icons or actors of experimental word games. In Pia Maria’s 16mm film „Marche au Supplice“ the feathered head of chicken takes on the search for the rest of his filetted body – a narration between splatter film and fairy tale. Rosa Barba’s 16 mm film „Panzano“ documents three persons in a house that play a fictional family. The film’s non-linear structure and only sporadic dialogue makes it a fascinating experiment with narrative codes. In his film trilogy „Fiction“ Ziad Saad deals with filmic reality and/or real fiction. Is the quarrel between the two protagonists real? Can a dead person speak? The artist adeptly moves between two spheres, letting the viewer decide whether it is a real documentation or a filmic narration.

During the whole evening the sound installation by Italian artist Andrea Melloni can be heard.

During the breaks and after 10.15pm Alex Györfi will play records as a DJ.

Participating artists are: Alexander Györfi, Andrea Melloni, Cobi van Tonder, Daniel Kunle, Heike Aumüller, Jackie Sumell, Monika Nuber, Pia Maria Martin, Rosa Barba and Ziad Saad.
