Our conceptions of the urban are grounded in the solid and the terrestrial. Moisture — and wetness — are pushed to the margins. However, cities around the world, from Berlin to Bombay, from Chicago to Kolkata, are built on wetlands. The unequal access to drinking water and chronic flooding are pressing dilemmas of contemporary urban life, especially in the face of climate change and the failure of urban planning.

The exhibition An Amphibious Urbanism comprises photographs of the city, captured through the porous and osmotic surface of the urban landscape. The project is based on extensive ethnographic research in the wetlands of Guwahati, involving various human and non-human interlocutors.

With Maan Barua (2023/2024 fellow).

The project was made possible by the European Research Council Horizon 2020 Starting Grant Urban Ecologies: Rethinking Nonhuman Life in Global Cities, Grant No. 759239.

The exhibition is presented in cooperation with the Akademie Schloss Solitude.
