The 80th birthday of pianist, composer, sound artist and one of the most important radio personalities in Germany, Hans Otte, takes place on December 3. To commemorate the occasion, his biographer and long-time artistic assistant, former Solitude fellow Ingo Ahmels, introduces Schott Music International’s comprehensive German-English publication titled Hans Otte-Klang der Klänge/Sound of Sounds, which will be presented to the public for the first time at Solitude. Following the main theme of the book Otte vs. Cage, Ahmels curates an exciting piano evening titled »Orient: Occident – Cage: Otte«. In an especially illuminating way, two pianists approach two 20th-century masterpieces: Cage’s far-eastern influenced Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano, 1946, and Otte’s Occidental Book of Sounds 1979-1982, complement excerpts from Otte’s Zen-inspired piano cycle Book of Hours 1991-1998. Performing on the piano are former Solitude fellow Elmar Schrammel as well as the pianist and student of Otte, Philipp Vandré. Otte will be present at the concert.
