In the past year, composer and former Solitude fellow Rachel C. Walker has worked together intensively with the Viennese ensemble airborne extended. For APOTHEOSE, they will be joining forces again to perform a selection of Rachel’s solo works from recent years: Harpsichord/Electronic Solo Cloud Prints, written in Beijing in 2015, and the harp solo 没有梦的人在梦中走过 (In / Without Dreams), written in Hanover in 2020.
The multidisciplinary concert will explore the tensions between music, electronics, objects, and performance, and also include pieces by Elisabeth Schimana, Ugurcan Öztekin and Marina Poleukhina.
It will become evident that airborne extended lives up to its name in manifold ways: live electronics and the latest acoustic chamber music will alternate with sound design played on everyday objects such as kitchen items and recycled pieces. By being embedded in art, these elements will appear in a new light, building a bridge to everyday life and current social issues.
Some pieces include audio score/acoustic memory: In Elisabeth Schimana’s Landschaften (landscapes), the musicians use samples as source material that they translate for their respective instruments. Their interpretations follow a fixed time structure and emerge from acoustic memory.
The evening will conclude with a playlist featuring various musical influences on Rachel C. Walker’s compositional work. Guests are invited to stay for drinks and reflect on the evening’s experiences.
Rachel C. Walker writes poetic, timbre-sensitive works drawing from her ongoing immersion in and research on Chinese folk music, musical time, and language. She engages in long-term collaborations with living writers, exploring the philosophical connections between transcription and translation within abstract musical syntaxes.
She was awarded with a fellowship at Akademie Schloss Solitude (Aural & Physical) in 2022. She is the Artistic Director of the new music and media organization neuMERZ.
The format APOTHEOSE is initiated and organized by Jan Nicola Angermann. The concert is a cooperation with the Akademie Schloss Solitude.
