The theft of intellectual property was already known to Roman poets in the first century AD. Today, plagiarism has developed further into the ubiquitous »Googling« and »Wikipedia-ing« as a way to gain knowledge and ultimately »cut and paste«. How do artists deal with the liberal use of their own works and those of other artists? How do scientists judge the unattributed quote? And how do economic companies in global legal cases deal with the obvious copying of their products? Is expanding the national legal frameworks with a copyright novelty or finding an international compromise the correct approach, or do new offers like the sharing concept of the Creative Commons licensing system promise the urgently needed solution?
The workshop is opened by an evening lecture on the question »Is Copyright about Creativity?« by Alexander Peukert, Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property, Competition and Tax Law, Munich.
The symposium was initiated by Philippe Perreaux. The lawyer and specialist in copyright issues was a fellow in the Akademie’s art, science & business program in 2007.
