Les Maquisards by Hemley Boum is about the Cameroonian peaceful independence movement UPS, in the late 50s, which is violently suppressed by the colonial administration and forced to operate underground. Head of the movement is the charismatic Ruben Um Nyobe. Around him, the author Hemley Boum invents a web of relationships between men and women linked by family, love, passion, and their political goals. Through numerous flashbacks the author expands the novel into a family saga about the lives of five generations.
